How to set up a Markets Living Room

The Living Room is one of the main areas in a living space. It’s where we tend to gather and relax or unwind from our day. In some cases, it’s also a crucial gathering place for the household.

However you use your living space depending on your lifestyle, consider how your awareness of your Human Design Environment Colour can help you play with your space’s energy.

Remember this is not an exhaustive list of every way you could set up your living room according to your Markets Environment — but meant to be a fun starting point to get you thinking differently about your space.

If you need to locate your Environment Variable, check out this post.

Find that one chair

I love a good accent chair. Every Markets person who comes over — always chooses the accent chair — if they like it of course. Consider how you could have “your chair” as a Markets Person; that one cozy or cool spot that you just LOVE.

Try modular furniture

Whatever your trade, craft or lifestyle is, consider how to best set up your living space to support that. Due to the nature of the Markets person, it’s likely that throughout the year your interests or crafts might shift. Having a living space that is modular in some way and can work with these changes is really supportive. It’s great to have a space that accommodates different furniture layouts, or furniture that can work in a number of ways.

Not everything all at once

Get into the habit of rotating your decor items. Not all your collection needs to be out at once. How might you put some things away in a safe cupboard, credenza or closet, only to reintegrate it into the decor again in a future season. Switch out those vases. Swap that picture. Consider setting out your decor items in seasons, letting particular items you love shine for a season, then have a season of rest. This can do a lot for keeping your space feeling fresh.

Have fun with options

Keep your essentials available, and rotate through options that reflect your style and taste. Let’s say you need to have pillows on your couch: try a couple options of slip covers that you can rotate between. Maybe for a couple seasons you have a handmade pillow with cool roving, and maybe you swap it out with a cool gingham look. Maybe for you it’s a blanket, but that fleece one is too hot for the warmer months so you have a lighter option. Play with your favourite items.

Hand select your pieces

Consider hand-picking the items in your space, either through vintage thrifting, or even custom orders with specific fabrics. The more freedom to select from different options or customize something will create an awesome connection with the object, which permeates through your space. This can also be felt by finding the perfect thrifted treasure, like an emerald green chesterfield or the perfect copper kettle.

Give it a moment

I like to think of the things in Markets People’s homes as part of this large curated collection. And while rotating decor items can keep things very fresh for Markets People, if you do have a specific collection of something — give it a moment. Let it take up space. Amassing a collection of something can create deep nourishment for Markets People. (Consider how you might be doing this digitally as well!)

Define your Style

I find all second colours and tones in Human Design are attracted to this, but it’s particularly loud for Markets Environments. Are you low-key, classic with a touch of boho? Are you masculine, simple, with a touch of contemporary? Are you straight up modern? Consider all the descriptive language we have available to define your style. Look around your space and play with the name you would use to describe your unique mix.
