Get your EXACT birth time
As the Human Design lover keeps studying, eventually they begin to scratch beneath the surface of their design, and find themselves in their Variable — this area of study that measures their depths and how to take care of their Body and Mind. It’s a really fun area of study.
The four Variable are Determination, Environment, Perspective and Motivation and they are represented by four arrows around the head of your Bodygraph; each of these areas are coloured with information that describes something special about you, and they’re based on the precise moment you were born.
Case study: Meet Kaela.
Kaela’s mother gave birth to her in her own home around 7:15 in the morning. That’s the last thing Kaela remembers hearing about it. Her mom passed away, and Kaela can’t verify the information any further. There’s no record Kaela can track down to the nature of her home birth.
As Kaela dug a little more into her Human Design studies, she came across her Variable, and learned she was a Cold Eater, with Touch Cognition. As Kaela continued studying, she learned if she was born just a few moments after 7:15, her brain flipped from passive to active, making her a Calm Eater with Smell Cognition.
Calm, Smell was very different from Cold, Touch.
At first, Kaela felt very connected to her original birth data of being a Cold, Touch. She had been experimenting with that information for some time, and felt good about it. But as her experimenting kept on, Kaela wasn’t sure. So she opened up to experimenting with Calm, Smell.
In Kaela’s case, there is no way to be certain about her exact birth time, so how might we empower Kaela while being mindful of what information is safe to experiment with?
Based on Kaela’s information, I encouraged her to experiment with a strong focus on her Environment Variable. Kaela’s Environment maintained the Fifth Colour Valleys with an Outer Vision third Tone, regardless of change in time. By radically experimenting with her Valleys Environment, Kaela may be able to discover her Determination Colour through self-observation and noticing how she naturally eats when her mind doesn’t interfere. Though simple and possible, this is extremely challenging to actually do without having your mind interfere.

I’ve seen a lot of birth times that seem rounded, like being born at 7:15 or 7:30.
And while it’s totally possible that some of us are born at those precise times, there’s also a good chance that birth time is rounded and slightly inaccurate simply because we don’t realize how important it is, or the precision is not available to us.
What are the depths in human design variable
Gate — Line — Colour — Tone — Base
Gate = surface • Base = deepest
Here’s what all these decimals translate to:
63 IS THE GATE. Gates are those numbers on the Energy Centers. Like Gate 63 in the Head Centre. There are 64 possible Gates. In this example, we’re looking at Gate 63.
63.6 IS THE GATE + LINE. Lines are the decimal number that comes after the Gate, expressing one of six possible numbers that Line can have. In this example, we’re looking at Gate 63 expressing with a Line 6.
63.6.6 IS THE GATE + LINE + COLOUR. Colours are the decimal number after the Line, and they can express as one of six possible numbers. In this example, we’re looking at Gate 63.6 with a sixth Colour.
63.6.6.6 IS THE GATE + LINE + COLOUR + TONE. Tones are the decimal; number after the Colour, and they can express as one of six possible numbers. This is really deep now, and these numbers can change minute-to-minute. In this example, we’re looking at Gate 63.6.6 with a sixth Tone.
63.6.6.6.4 IS THE GATE + LINE + COLOUR + TONE + BASE. Bases are the final decimal in this sequence and as deep as we can measure. This depth is very hard to “relate” to. And interestingly, there are only five bases. In this example, we’re looking at Gate 63.6.6.6 with Base 4.
One Gate can have a total of 1080 possible depth combinations.
How might we find the most precise birth time possible? And how can we be safe when we’re not sure.
Because even if we ARE certain about our birth time, there is a chance we’re still wrong. “What if the clock was out in the delivery room of your birth?” — a question I heard Emotional Projector Jes Fields ask, and I thought it was a great point. How can we safely and spaciously explore our Variable based on the information available to us?
The whole point in the study of Human Design is to reconnect to yourself and how you feel within and in the world around you. The point is to deeply connect to yourself. The moment you were born is all about you — it’s not about the Bodygraph. It’s not about Ra. It’s about you. The birth time is the most important information because you are the most important information. Human Design is just the language of awareness used to describe you. Without your birth time, we have nothing. So let’s be as precise as possible, and translate what’s safe.
