How to set up a Mountains Altar & Ceremony Space
What is a ceremony space? Considering whether you’re a Caves, Markets, Kitchens, Mountains, Valleys, or Shores Environment, can help you dedicate a space with playful intention, and conscious awareness.
Having a spot in your home that allows you to gather your spirits and focus your energy is often called an altar, but these spaces for your private rituals can be called anything your heart desires.
Maybe your ceremony space is your bedside table. Maybe it’s the study. Maybe it’s your yoga room, or the closet you tuck your ritual tools away in.
Try these things in your Mountains Environment, and build a vibey ceremony site that resonates with you.
Perform standing up
When you’re participating in your ritual, elevate yourself physically. Perhaps this is a yoga performance that moves from seated positions and more into standing movements. If you’re meditating, instead of laying down, trying sitting upright on a bolster. If you’re reading tarot or oracle cards, read at your standing desk, or the kitchen island. Maybe your ritual is talking to yourself in the mirror to work through an idea. Stand in your bathroom mirror with the door closed rather than sitting on your bum looking at yourself through your phone. Leave that for the Valleys and Shores kids to figure out.
Bring in luxurious scents
Scents travel on the air, and from the energy of the Mountain top, the wind blows in all kiiiiinds of fragrances across your nose. Smell is deeply connected to Caves, another Environment you resonate with. How might you bring this familiarity and sacred part of Earth into your ritual? Scent can bring a sense of space. Elevate things!
Make space to cry
You see all kinds of things on the mountain, and some things you see are hard, cold, and desolate. It can be hard to take in some of the lower experiences Earth has to offer, and making time and space to release these experiences will be very nourishing. How might you develop a ritual and practice of clearing your feelings in an elevated way?
Have a getaway corner
The perfect place for your altar or divination toolkit is tucked away somewhere far from the rest of the home’s energy. Maybe it’s a secret cupboard in your night stand, or a spruced of shed behind your house. Either way, you’re able to flee or hide away there for a time, undisturbed and able to take a breather. This is and of itself is a massive ritual for you. Wherever you run to, how might you make that area even more special?
Invest in a special piece
Maybe it’s a hefty crystal ball, or hand-rolled herbal smokes. Maybe it’s a high quality meditation pillow, or the latest version of the Muse headband. Whatever the elevated piece-du-jour you’re coveting, treat yourself by investing in a luxurious wellness piece. It will draw you to participate in the experience more, and help make your ritual extra special and just for you.
Ritual idea: smoke something
Well-aware this may be unappealing for some, the Mountains person has a connection with the ritual of inhaling and exhaling. While this breath pattern can be experienced through a variety of ways, the act of consuming plant material is deeply shamanic, and part of many cross cultural spiritual practices of our people. Consider how creating a special peace pipe ritual, filled with plant material of your choice, might elevate your intentional moments of spiritual play. Please remember to run this through your own Authority. I only suggest it as I have witnessed many Mountains People re-meet this part of themselves and find expansive revelations fit for the unique spirit of the ones from the Mountains.
Build the classic Mountains altar
To connect deeply with the elevation of your environment, set out a traditional altar by finding a small space that is private and away from others. Dress yourself in a sacred adornment, whether this is your favourite white robes, a splash of Agua de Florida, or the perfect skincare layering. Ensure the entire energy of your sacred space is neutralized and infused with the spirit you want to be surrounded by. Through privacy and a mix of smells, sights and sounds, spend time in this healing sanctuary. Have a photo of something deeply special to you on your altar or dedicated space, and take intentional space with this image. Seek inspiration from the literal mountain by placing stones or crystals, power phrases or words of inspiration, photos of mountains, skylines, or representations of your aspirations, upon your altar. Keep a divination tool ready for use nearby, such as oracle or tarot cards, lithomancy kits, tea leaves, or a crystal ball. Enjoy your ceremony.
