How to set up a Valleys Altar & Ceremony Space

What is a ceremony space? Considering whether you’re a Caves, Markets, Kitchens, Mountains, Valleys, or Shores Environment, can help you dedicate a space with playful intention, and conscious awareness.

Having a spot in your home that allows you to gather your spirits and focus your energy is often called an altar, but these spaces for your private rituals can be called anything your heart desires.

Maybe your ceremony space is your bedside table. Maybe it’s the study. Maybe it’s your yoga room, or the closet you tuck your ritual tools away in.

Try these things in your Valleys Environment, and build a vibey ceremony site that resonates with you.

Lead with sound

Whatever this means to you, consider the acoustic environment around you for your rituals. Whether you feel like speaking or chanting, shutting out the world, or setting the right moody music for your ceremony or dedication space, consider what kind of mood you like around you when you tune in, and prioritize that feeling in your space.

Experiment with headphones

Whether you are tuning into a meditation, listening to guided instruction, or shamanic journeying, consider building in headphones into your practice to deliver sounds to you without external interruption. Don’t forget to carve out private space for yourself so you aren’t interrupted. If headphones aren’t for you, consider how you could fill the space around you where the sounds guide your practice.

Sit on the ground

As a Valleys person, a lot of your ceremony space will be anchored through grounding rituals and techniques. When creating a altar or ceremony space in your home, bring in the pillows and bolsters that you can pull out to sit on to get as close to the earth as possible. Sit on your bum if you’re able to, fold your legs, and get low.

Bring your ritual outdoors

You may want to erect your altar or ceremony space in an outdoor space if you have that available to you. Getting into the garden, anchoring down in your backyard or on your patio can help bring a sense of peace through nature. Consider how you might tuck your tools away but in a nearby space if you choose to head outdoors.

Keep a variety of tools

Depending on your interests and how you’re feeling, consider the variety of tools you might need available to you. This could be crystals in a lithomancy kit; tarot or oracle cards; a meditation headband like the Muse headband, a special tea mix and tea set, a variety of books with varying interests, a shamanic drum, or something else. Whatever your collection of mystical tools are, have them spread out and available through your designated ceremony space or altar. Don’t forget to have something that plays music!

Ritual idea: group meetups

Something that has the potential to be very rewarding for you is to participate in ceremony or rituals with others; think of a group meetup for meditation; a Saturday brunch and tarot reading sesh; or New Moon gatherings with those in your neighbourhood, or even Sunday’s at church or the temple. For you, a lot of the enhancement comes through regularly plugging in on a set frequency, such as weekly, monthly, or seasonally.

Build the classic Valleys altar

To connect deeply by grounding into your environment, set out a traditional altar by finding a small space that you can treat with great care and respect. This can be set out low on your coffee table, or tucked beneath a window in your favourite space. Dress yourself in a sacred adornment, whether this is your favourite cozy cardigan, a douse of rose perfume, or the perfect hair mask. Ensure the entire energy of your sacred space is filled with the melodies that make your spirit sing. Place sacred objects from the earth onto your altar, like a special crystal or shell, twisted piece of wood, or dried flowers. Add a journal or favourite text/book that is filled with information you are bowing to, like a bible, a favourite book, or an occult text. Add elemental items like a candle and an special drink, and spend time kneeling, sitting or bowing before this space as you engage with it through a practice of some kind. Seek inspiration from the literal valley by placing books, power phrases or words of inspiration, photos of hills and valleys and vistas, or representations of your aspirations, around your altar. Keep your divination tools ready for use nearby, such as oracle or tarot cards, lithomancy kits, tea leaves, or a crystal ball. Enjoy your ceremony.
