How to set up a Shores Deck, Patio, or Outdoor area

There are many ways to identify what type of spaces you resonate with. From a Human Design Environment perspective, looking at your Environment Colour will let you know what your Body vibes best with.

This can be translated to the people who fill the spaces you find yourself in, to your surroundings — from your location, to your nation, to your city, to your home — to how you hold your physical body in time and space.

These tips are for setting up an Outdoor Area that feels best for a Shores Environment person. These ideas are meant to be a starting point for you to expand on when considering your Outdoor Living Space from a Shores perspective. Always go with what feels good for you — and leave out the things that fall flat.

Indoorsy Outdoors

Where Caves People aren’t outdoorsy by nature, Shores People are. I think of Caves as Outdoorsy Indoors and Shores as Indoorsy Outdoors. How can your interior spill out into the exterior? Can you have a second outdoor kitchen? A second outdoor living room? Summer outdoor office? How can you make the outdoors as living friendly as possible based on your lifestyle, so you can spend as much time outdoors as possible when the weather allows it?

Easily Accessible

Ensure getting outside is accessible as possible. Ensure it’s easy, so when you need to quickly step out for a few moments, it’s easy. There shouldn’t be a big disconnect between your indoor and outdoor spaces, but rather an overlap. You want your outdoor space to feel like an extension of your indoor space, and it needs to be integrated into the environment in some way. Try not to have anything that blocks your outside energy from spilling in and vice versa.

Furniture arrangement

It’s ideal to have at least two seating arrangements with different views in your outdoor space, such as an East View (sunrise) or West View (sunset). Try placing two outdoor lounges across from each other to encourage exchanges, and offer different perspective opportunities. Perhaps one area is sheltered from the elements with shade, and the other is out beneath the sun.

Shores lighting

If you’re a valleys person, there can be a really powerful connection you feel to the Earth — the greatest SOURCE of all life and power. Consider how it might feel to have comfy low seating available, whether that is a handy bolster to sit on, or a blanket to lay out when you want to lay on the ground. Valleys people tend to gravitate to the floor when they’re vibing and flowing, and you may just like to sit on the ground! If this is you, consider how you might be able to encourage this in your outdoor space. Low to the ground furniture can be really fun for Valleys People to play with.

Bring on the plants

Plants are wonderful for Shores People because of the transformation a growing plant grows through. It has a before and after, and in some cases can be harvested for new uses. Some plants dramatically change colour depending on the season. This change around you through plants can make a vibrant and alive Shores Environment. The small changes over time provide a great baseline for reflecting through past and present timelines as you grow in your own journey.

Space and a view

Ensure your Shores Outdoor space has a spacious flow among the arrangement of furniture or decor items. It’s ideal if there is breathing room, and the opportunity for a moment of a change in perspective. A Shores set up will also have a great view of something, whether that is colourful scenery, a gorgeous skyline, or a perfectly manicured yard, separate from the inside of the home.
