Paint the ceiling a darker colour than the walls
If you’re afraid of putting colour on the walls, try the ceiling! By painting the ceiling a darker colour, you help create the illusion of a cave-like space. This is also a fun way to flex your colour personality! Try something dark or a few shades darker than your walls to create a modern, cozy, cave-like feel. I’ve also seen ceiling beams, wood treatments and even fabrics and textures strategically used on ceilings. Have fun with it!
Hang blackout curtains
Keep that light out, and create a cozy safe tucked in environment with black out curtains that you can open and close when needed. Don’t just look at your doors as access/entry points to the cave, but also your windows.
Play with dimmers, lamps and candles
Experiment with low lighting, and lamps or candles rather than overhead lighting. As the night approaches, consider dimming the light in the home as well… or you know, use those black out curtains!
Have soft rugs, or large pillows that can be laid out on floor. Encourage things to get low and chill.
Sprawl out on the ground, or lounge low and cozy with fun bean bags or luscious fabrics. Have fun with your space and don’t be afraid to get cuddly. Imagine curling in front of a fire place with a pouf, some pillows and a blanket? Bliss!
Create a nook
I once removed the closet in my Caves Kid’s room and built in a reading nook by painting inside the closet, framing a bench where the recess used to be, and adding a foam topper to create a built in reading nook right in his room. We added floating bookshelves on the side and little lights he could hit with his hands to turn on. Whenever I couldn’t find his Caves Dad, sure enough he would be chilling in the nook. Where are the little corners in your space where you can carve out just a twinge more space for something cozy and cute? Check out your corners and nooks and get creative.
